Leather furniture is very popular, but it does require some care. During the colder months the humidity drops, and your leather furniture tends to dry out. You can keep this from happening by applying a good leather conditioner. A leather conditioner will moisturize, and make your leather soft to the touch. If your leather gets dirty you can clean it with the right product, and a little knowledge.
How to buy a good vacuum. Take the guess work out of buying a good vacuum by being an educated consumer.

Buying a new vacuum can be a daunting task. So many choices, and so many manufacturers. The first thing you need to ask yourself is; do I want a cheap disposable vacuum to get me by, or should I invest in a high quality vacuum. If you’re renting, or a student my vote would be to go with a disposable vacuum. The reason being it’s not your carpet. If you don’t remove the destructive gritty dirt that causes premature wearing of the carpet it’s not your carpet. A disposable vacuum today is anything purchased for under $200. Vacuums in this price range are sold at the big box discount stores. You’ll have to assemble it when you get it home, and don’t expect any help if it breaks. If you break a belt or need a filter you’ll want to purchase these items to keep it going. Anything major goes wrong with the vacuum throw it in the trash. It’s not worth putting money into these units.

Vacuums sold for over $200 tend to be a better quality. They will last longer, and remove more dirt out of your carpet. Try to buy a vacuum made in America if possible. I know it’s becoming increasingly difficult to do today. American made vacuums are Riccar, Simplicity, and good old Kirby. This is important if you need parts, or service. There are great vacuums made overseas but sometimes parts are an issue if they break. Miele is a high quality vacuum as is Bosch. The old standbys we grew up with Hoover, Eureka, Royal, Dirt Devil, and Bissell are all made in China, or Mexico. They have some good models that grade out well with Consumer Report, but the quality of workmanship has really slipped. Avoid any vacuum sold on the internet, or with an unfamiliar name. History is full of vacuum companies that were here today, and gone tomorrow. Can you say Phantom, Regina, GE, Whirlpool, and many others that tried their hand at vacuums. The Dyson is made in Malaysia, and I’m not a big fan of any of their machines. They seem to put all the emphasis on the advertising, and promotion of the machine. The combination of the English accent, and hitting all the hot buttons with consumers has them lining up in droves to purchase their machines. Satisfaction after you buy is often a different story. If you ever need to get it repaired, or buy filters for it bring a big wallet.

The type of vacuum you buy is a personal choice. Uprights, and canister vacuums will both do a good job. I find if you grew up using a certain style of vacuum you’ll probably stay with that style. A home with all hard surface floors, and no carpet is probably the perfect venue for a straight suction canister vacuum. You don’t need the rotating agitator because the dirt is right there on the surface. Dirt works it’s way into the carpet, and requires a revolving agitator to bring it to the surface. A little demonstration you can do to see if the vacuum you’re interested in or currently own will do this is to take sand and rub it into an area of the carpet until it disappears. This is the kind of dirt tracked into your home on the bottom of your shoes. Get your vacuum, turn it on and stop the vacuum just in front of the area you poured the sand into the carpet. You should see the sand coming to the surface from the bottom of the carpet. If you don’t the vacuum you have or are considering will only surface clean the carpet. It’s okay if you’re renting, and it’s not your carpet, but bad if it’s your carpet. You can get even more information by clicking here to see a short video on the different types of vacuums.

Learn how your whirlpool bathtub could be a germ incubator, and how to make sure yours isn't.

Imagine after a hard day at work the kids are fed and asleep for the night. You draw the water in your whirlpool bathtub in anticipation of a relaxing soak. The mood is perfect. Well I don’t want to ruin it for you, but I do want to make you aware of some possible health risks. It turns out the place you clean yourself might not be so clean. A recent study at Texas A&M by microbiologist Rita Moyes tested 43 water samples from whirlpool bathtubs. She found that all had mild to dangerous levels of bacterial growth. Almost all showed bacteria from fecal matter, 81% showed fungi, and 34% tested positive for staph bacteria. The reason is the water lurking in the tubs pipes feeding the jets. When you shut the jets off, and drain your tub some water remains in the pipes. You have warm water with bacteria from your body in a dark place with no air movement. A perfect incubator for all manner of nasty bacteria to reproduce. It stays in the pipes until the next time you fill your tub in anticipation of a relaxing soak. When you turn on the jets it spews the stagnant water from the pipes into the tub with you.

Experts recommend adding a cup of bleach to the water in the tub before you drain it, and turning the jets on. This will circulate bleach water throughout the tubs system. Of course you do this after you’ve stepped out of the tub. Wipe your tub dry after you drain it. Then spray the inside with a disinfectant spray, or foaming disinfectant cleaner.

How to clean a toilet like a professional. Learn the tips, and tricks in cleaning toilets used by hotel housekeepers.

Everyone has cleaned a toilet in their life, unless maybe you’re Donald Trump. Would you be surprised if I told you a housekeeper in a hotel cleaned it differently than you or I? I’m going to share with you the tips, and tricks they use. The first thing you’ll need is a good pair of rubber gloves, a toilet bowl brush, and some toilet bowl cleaner. The gloves can be any type of rubber, or latex gloves. Examination gloves are 100 to a box and you throw them away after using. The toilet bowl brush shouldn’t have any exposed metal that will scratch the porcelain. Most hotel housekeepers use a soft brush, or swab. Lastly the cleaner can be a non acid bowl cleaner, or acid. Acid bowl cleaners come in phosphoric acid , or hydrochloric acid. Phosphoric is mild and relatively safe. Hydrochloric acid can be dangerous but in areas where hard water, and minerals are prevalent is sometimes the only thing to get the job done. Hydrochloric acid bowl cleaners come in varying strengths. A 9% is weaker than a 23%. Wearing eye protection when cleaning a toilet bowl is a good rule of thumb especially if you’re using an acid.

Using your brush or bowl swab I want you to flush the toilet, and as water starts to fill it push the water down the hole at the bottom of the toilet. Your goal is to get as much water out of the bowl as possible. The reason being when you add the bowl cleaner you don’t want it diluted by the water. Add the bowl cleaner, and starting under the rim swab the chemical from the top down to the bottom of the bowl. Allow this to sit in the toilet bowl for 5 to 10 minutes so the chemical has time to work. Return with your bowl brush or swab to give it a final scrubbing then flush. Hotel housekeepers will empty the water out of the bowl add the cleaner, and clean the rest of the bathroom before doing the toilet last. A final caution is if your bathroom floor is polished stone make sure you don’t drip any of the bowl cleaner on the stone as it will etch the stone removing the shine. Watch a short video of how this is done by clicking here.

Holidays are the time for good friends, family, and food stains in your carpet. Learn how to remove food stains from your carpet like the professionals do.

Tis the season for friends, and family entertaining. It also is the season for dropped plates, spilled drinks, and cheese dip in your carpet. Unfortunately this happens when people get together, and food is served. Never fear because now that you’re reading this blog you’ll get those stains out of your carpet with ease. The first thing you want to do when Uncle Ned announces he’s dropped his plate of food on your carpet is to scrape up as much as you possibly can. I want you to get an absorbent towel, and blot up as much of the spill as you can. What’s left is the stain on the fibers we’re going to draw out using the same methods the professionals use. You’ll need a good carpet spot remover, and more absorbent towels. I want you to spray the stain with the spot remover, and using a metal spoon agitate the stain working from the outside of the stain in towards the center. We do this so you don’t make the stain bigger. When you see the stain releasing from the carpet fibers it’s time to blot the stain with your absorbent towels. This draws the stain up, and out of the carpet into the towel. Repeat until the stain is completely removed. Flush the area with water, and blot again to remove any chemical from your carpet. Watch a short video on this process by clicking here.

How to remove pet stains from your carpet when the unthinkable happens. Sometimes a houseful of people, and an excitable dog have unwanted consequences.

If you’re planning on having folks over for the holidays, and you have pets this blog is for you. You’re planning on having a house full of people, and your pet isn’t used to all these people. This is when the little fellow gets so excited, and happy to see everyone they piddle on your carpet. Heaven forbid your guest take pity on the little critter, and decide to feed them immense quantities of table food. Your carpet problems just became a lot bigger, no pun intended. Well never fear because you’re going to be able to deal with this like a professional. The first thing you need to do when grandma nonchalantly lets you know your dog just threw up on your carpet is grab absorbent towels. You want to pick up as much of the substance as you can. Use your towels to blot up as much of the liquid as you can. The next step is to get a good commercial pet stain remover with enzymes, and if you’ve read this blog you already have it. You will spray the stain with the pet spot remover, and using a spoon agitate the stain working towards the center. You do this so you don’t spread the stain. When you see the stain releasing from the carpet, blot with an absorbent towel drawing the stain out. Continue this process until the stain is gone. Lastly use water to flush the area, and blot again with absorbent towels. You do this to remove any chemical residue from your carpet. Watch a short video on how this is done by clicking here.

Learn how to polish your silverware. Make a silver polishing solution at home. Also learn how the professionals cheat to have gleaming silver that lasts up to six months.

The holiday season is upon us, and it’s tradion to use the good china once a year at Christmas. This also means polishing the silver if you haven’t sold it already. With silver hovering around$37 an ounce it’s a thought, and just think you’d never have to polish it again. I can remember my mom spending hours polishing the silver in anticipation of the big Christmas dinner. I can make it a lttle easier for you with a good home made cleaning solution. I’m also going to share another way of polishing the silver using a fantastic commercial product. This way is for the folks who want to short cut, and have truly gleaming silver. First the home made solution. I want you to line a large baking dish or your kitchen sink with aluminum foil. Fill with hot steaming water, add two tablespoons of baking soda, and two tablespoons of salt. Place your silver in the solution so it’s touching. You’ll be able to see the tarnish coming off. When you remove your silver buff with a dry rag. Now for the folks like me who want to cheat, and have really gleaming silver. I recommend using Porters Friend Silver Polish or a product called Flitz. I’ve had great luck with both. Watch a short video of the process by clicking here. Before using the silver on the big day I’d give it a quick run through the dishwasher to remove any polish residue on the silver. If you’re storing your silver after polishing it will maintain a shine for up to six months.

Pine needles can really do a number on your vacuum. Learn how to unclog your vacuum, and fix it yourself.

It’s the holiday season, and with it comes the raising of the Christmas tree. I remember in my family it was a huge deal. I was the only girl with four older brothers. They, and my father would travel to a Christmas tree farm to select the perfect tree. It was mine, and my mothers job to decorate it. We would keep the tree up a good three weeks to enjoy it. This meant we would experience significant loss of pine needles from the tree. My mother would vacuum them up with her trusty Hoover vacuum, and every year the vacuum would become clogged. It never failed. We knew when she started picking them up what the result was going to be. My father would have to take the thing apart, find the clog, and remove it. The best part was I’d get to hear my dad say words I wasn’t supposed to know, and wasn’t allowed to repeat. My recommendation is to use a shop style vacuum to pick up the bulk of the pine needles. If you’re going to use your good vacuum make sure it has an empty bag when you start, and let the vacuum take small bites of the pine needles. Nothing clogs it quicker than trying to gulp up a big pile of pine needles in one bite. Check your bag frequently, and make sure you don’t break a belt.
Did you know your kitchen sink could have more germs in it than your toilet?

Did you know your toilet may have less harmful bacteria than your kitchen sink. Food particles left on plates to soak, or rinsed off the plates become a fertile breeding ground for bacteria. Having a garbage disposal gives those crumbs, and pieces of food an area to become lodged. Your drain plug at the bottom of the sink is a favorite repository for unwanted critters. If you use your sink to prepare ground beef or poultry salmonella and ecoli is often present. If you think about it we normally just rinse the sink when we’re done using it. We normally clean our toilets with a bowl cleaner that’s also a disinfectant. It’s no big surprise your kitchen sink could be harboring some nasty germs. You can remedy this situation by cleaning your sink thoroughly with hot soapy water after each use. In addition a bleach, and water mixture, or a disinfectant diluted will kill any germs lurking in your garbage disposal. Lastly don’t forget to wash your drain plug, and drain at the bottom of the sink.
