I want you to get an absorbent towel, and blot up as much of the spill as you can. What’s left is the stain on the fibers we’re going to draw out using the same methods the professionals use. You’ll need a good carpet spot remover, and more absorbent towels. I want you to spray the stain with the spot remover, and using a metal spoon agitate the stain working from the outside of the stain in towards the center. We do this so you don’t make the stain bigger. When you see the stain releasing from the carpet fibers it’s time to blot the stain with your absorbent towels. This draws the stain up, and out of the carpet into the towel. Repeat until the stain is completely removed. Flush the area with water, and blot again to remove any chemical from your carpet. This is when the little fellow gets so excited, and happy to see everyone they piddle on your carpet. The first thing you need to do when grandma nonchalantly lets you know your dog just threw up on your carpet is grab absorbent towels. You want to pick up as much of the substance as you can. Use your towels to blot up as much of the liquid as you can. The next step is to get a good commercial pet stain remover with enzymes, and if you’ve read this blog you already have it. You will spray the stain with the pet spot remover, and using a spoon agitate the stain working towards the center. You do this so you don’t spread the stain. When you see the stain releasing from the carpet, blot with an absorbent towel drawing the stain out. Continue this process until the stain is gone. Now I’ll let you in on a little secret. I’ve found a product which comes pretty darn close. It’s an industrial strength carpet spotter, and it is my new best friend. It removes blood, wine, feces, urine, vomit,kool aid, berry stains, coffee, tea, cola, cosmetics, dairy products, food spills, fruit juice, grass, gravy, grime, ketchup, chocolate, pet stains, and spaghetti sauce. Having many friends with children I get asked frequently how to remove chewing gum from carpets. Having two daughters myself I’ve never figured out how the gum gets from the their mouth into my carpet. The good news is it’s really easy to get out if you know how. The best way is to freeze the gum with a really great product I found called Gum Out. It’s made by a company in Illinois Claire Manufacturing. You spray the gum in the carpet for five seconds then pop it out using a teaspoon. If it doesn’t all pop out the first time spray the gum and repeat. I’ve heard about using ice cubes to freeze the gum , and I’m going to tell you it doesn’t work. It doesn’t freeze the gum, and all you end up with is a wet sticky mess.

     The other product I’ve found that works is made by Core Products out of Texas, and it’s called Citrus Gel. This product dissolves the gum. You need to work fast with this product, and have some rags handy to pull the gum out of the carpet. If you don’t it will dissolve it but it will run down into the backing of the carpet. Aunt Patti understands gum occasionally will magically get in your carpet if you have little ones. Also another fact if you have more than one child you’ll find all are innocent of the crime. I recently learned one of the major network morning shows featured a guest who recommended cleaning pet urine out of carpet with salt. The recommendation was to dump salt on the pet urine then vacuum it up with your vacuum. I don’t know where people get these crazy ideas. The saddest part of the story is a major television show would give someone a platform to spread this nonsense. First of all salt will not remove urine from carpet. The urine will soak down into the backing of the carpet, and provide a new favorite place for your pet to pee. You have to use a spot remover designed to remove pet stains, blot the stain out of the carpet, and continue this process until it’s out. Use a pet stain remover with an enzyme added to address any residual urine that ends up in the pad.

Lastly if you use your vacuum to suck up pet urine you stand a good chance of ruining your vacuum. Think about the urine you pick up being circulated through all the moving parts of your vacuum. Now imagine what the exhaust will smell like every time you turn the machine on. What do you think happens to the metal parts coming into contact with wet salt and urine. Rust, and corrosion is the answer. Also if you ever read your owners manual it says do not vacuum up wet with your vacuum as a danger of electrocution may occur. Mixing electricity, and moisture isn’t a good idea unless you’re using a wet/dry vacuum. Aunt Patti had to address this crazy recommendation. Many of us have pets, and unfortunately they sometimes leave us unexpected presents. I’m going to give you step by step procedures on how to get it out of your carpet. The first thing you need to do upon discovering the accident is to remove as much as possible by picking it up or if it’s liquid by blotting it up with an absorbent towel. I’ve found putting as much pressure as possible even standing on the towel laid over the spot is best. Remember if it’s liquid the stain has run all the way through to the padding and you’re trying to draw it up and out. After you have removed as much as you can it’s time to use a spotter designed for pet stains. Make sure the product contains an enzyme. I’ll explain why later. Before you apply spotter to the stain have absorbent towels or rags at the ready. Spray the spot thoroughly and with the back of a metal spoon agitate the stain working it towards the center of the stain. This is so you don’t spread it. As soon as you see the spot releasing from the carpet fibers blot using clean towels. Rotate the towel to a clean area on the towel so you don’t reapply the stain to the carpet. Continue this process until it’s all removed. Lastly rinse the area with a little clean water and blot again.

   The reason you want a spot remover with enzyme is if you have residue from the accident it’ll digest the bacteria. Also you need to make sure there’s an odor counteractant in the spotter. The reason is animals have an acute sense of smell, and if they smell where they went in your carpet it’ll become their new favorite bathroom spot. The product we’ve had the best success with is a product called Unbelievable Pet Stain Remover and it contains an enzyme.

     Lastly I want to speak to you about the magically reappearing stain. This is what we call a spot that you clean but comes back. What’s happening is the stain has run down into the backing of the carpet. You need to reapply the spotter and use your absorbent towels to keep drawing the substance up and out.  That’s why I tell folks to draw the stains out with absorbent towels. In the carpet cleaning industry it’s called wicking and I’m sure you can get more detailed information about it on line. Sometimes with old stains or really bad ones you need to repeat this process to get it all out. Trust me if you follow this process you will get it all out.
